Sore throat (pharyngitis) belongs to the group of upper respiratory tract infections, in addition to inflammation of the nasal mucosa, vocal cords, and tonsillitis. They are the most common acute infectious diseases in human population. Pharyngitis occurs mostly during autumn and winter months, although it is not uncommon to develop sore throat during summer too. It is one of the main reasons why we visit our doctor and a local pharmacy, why we are absent from work and do not take our children to kindergarten or school. While it is not considered as complicated infection, it should not be taken lightly. In sensitive populations, such as pre-school children, the elderly, chronic and immunocompromised patients, serious complications including bacterial sinusitis, middle ear infections (otitis media) and bronchitis may occur.
It is estimated that more than 85% of all cases of throat infections are caused by viruses, which is why they are very easily transmitted from person to person, by inhaling tiny droplets in the air (aerosols) which contain virus. Although it is almost impossible to avoid the disease after being in contact with infected person, applying proper treatment and good prevention can significantly alleviate symptoms.

Sage essential oil soothes irritation of the mouth, throat and vocal cords. It is obtained from the dried leaves of Salvia officinalis, commonly known as common or garden sage. The name of the plant derives from the Latin word “salvare”, which means to treat, cure, save, and testifies to the long history of its medical use in human population. Carriers of the antimicrobial activity of sage essential oil are α-thujone, camphor, and 1,8-cineole.
Ekosept without sugar is a dietary supplement based on sage and peppermint essential oils in the form of refreshingly sour tablets with low nutritional value.
